Students Learn How to be Bully Proof

On Saturday, August 24, nearly 40 students attended our Bully Proof course at our Kempsville location to learn how to fend off bullies, just in time for the start of the new school year. Frank Cucci personally taught the course, which was featured on a special edition of “Parents’ Corner” on TV station WGNT. The number one goal of the course was to build confidence, which is essential for kids to stand up to bullies, as well as allow them to focus on their school work.

The first part of the course educated students on bully prevention techniques and how to deal with verbal bullying and mitigate the issue before anything physical happens. At LINXX, we call this “verbal Jiu-Jitsu.” Our instructors role-played in scenarios with students by acting as the bully and forcing the student to react accordingly by standing up to the bully or simply walking away. The second part of the course taught students some practical self-defense moves to use against common bully tactics such as head locks, punches and chokes. If the instructor/student scenario deteriorated and became physical, the student was then able to practice their grappling techniques to gain control of the situation and negotiate with the bully. Gaining control without hitting the bully back was a very important aspect of the course, so students did not have fear of getting into trouble for defending themselves. These real-life scenarios helped build confidence in the students so they could go into the new school year holding their head high and knowing they could take a stand against bullying.

The Bully Proof course was a huge success, and we would like to thank the instructors, parents and students who made this course such a great learning experience. LINXX Academy donated 100 percent of the proceeds from the course to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and we are thrilled to say that we raised $740!
